Doxycycline

doxycyclineThe drug is used for treating infections caused by certain bacteria. It may also be useful for prevention or slowing the progression of anthrax. Doxycycline may also be used for treating other conditions as directed by your doctor.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by affecting the production of proteins causing bacterial growth. Inhibiting bacterial growth enables the body’s defense mechanisms to destroy them.

You should avoid using Doxycycline if:

• you have allergic reaction to any component in Doxycycline
• you are taking birth control pills, acitretin, oral or penicillins

What medicines and conditions may interact with Doxycycline:

Tell your physician if any of the following applies to you:
• you are breast-feeding
• you are pregnant, or plan to get pregnant, or
• if you are using prescription or nonprescription drugs including dietary supplements
• if you have allergic reaction to any substance
• if you suffer from have stomach or intestinal infection, diarrhea, or blood disease called porphyria
• you use barbiturates, hydantoins, carbamazepine or penicillins (these drugs may reduce effectiveness of Doxycycline )
• you use isotretinoin or acitretin (drug combination may cause increased pressure inside the skull)
• you use Methotrexate, Anticoagulants or methoxyflurane(they may decrease the effect of Doxycycline)
• you use birth control pills

This may not be a full list of interactions. Check with your health care provider Doxycycline may interact with other drugs. Do not stop taking Doxycycline even your condition has much improved. Only your doctor may tell you when to stop taking it or change your dosage.
